Two teenage girls who climbed on top of a moving New York subway train for a sick social media stunt have been carried away in body bags.

Police found the two unconscious women, one aged just 13, at the Marcy Avenue stop in Brooklyn just after 3am on Saturday.

The girls, thought to be attempting the TikTok trend of ‘Subway surfing’ taking videos speeding through the city, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were seen carrying a black bag and a skateboard away from the scene. A group of more than a dozen teenagers were seen running through the train carriage before the girls climbed on the roof.

The force didn’t immediately identify the victims but New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow described them as girls involved in subway surfing.

‘It’s heartbreaking that two young girls are gone because they somehow thought riding outside a subway train was an acceptable game,’ Crichlow said in a statement.

‘Parents, teachers and friends need to be clear with loved ones: getting on top of a subway car isn’t “surfing” — it’s suicide.’

He said the grieving families and the transit workers who discovered the girls have been ‘horribly shaken by this tragedy.’

Police said the investigation was ongoing.

A number of teenagers, mostly boys, have been killed or badly injured in recent years while trying to ‘subway surf,’ a practice that dates back a century, but has been supercharged by social media.

The latest deaths bring the total number of subway surfing victims to five, police said. Last year there were six fatalities with five people killed attempting the stunts in 2023.

In 2022, Hamza Mohamed was riding a northbound R train Monday morning with friends when he tried to climb on top of the car at the 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue station in Queens.

The teen then fell from atop the train into the tracks below, and had part of his arm torn off by the train as it pulled away from the station.
