I don’t know about you, but I live for the first blustery day of the fall season. I start daydreaming of warm mugs of cider in my hands, soft sweaters, and family and friends gathered around my table. Hosting during the fall months is nothing short of magical, and if you’re looking for a sign to host your friends this season, let this be it!

I used to think hosting had to be expensive and complicated, but after making it a point this year to invite my friends over more often, I’ve learned that the best gatherings are casual and cozy. This fall is your chance to throw a few simple and heartfelt gatherings that will make the season feel extra special. Here are a few easy fall party ideas for a cozy night in with friends:

1. At-home café

If you’re not familiar with the at-home café trend that has been circulating around TikTok all year, let me introduce you to one of the coziest party ideas to host this fall. Homemade pumpkin spice lattes and cinnamon rolls with your friends at home? Yes, please!

The beauty of this gathering is that it can be as casual or as fancy as you like. If you want to be extra, print out a menu, set out paper coffee cups with personalized labels, and make some classic bakery treats from scratch. If baking is not your thing, grab some pastries from the grocery store and put them under a cake dome. Any treats nestled under a dome look fancy! You’ll also need a few different syrups and mix-ins for coffee so everyone can personalize their own beverage. I hosted my own at-home café earlier this year and offered two different syrups for lattes, and it was perfect! No need to make the menu huge—the simpler the better.

2. Harvest dinner party

If you’re a fall girlie and simply love the season, a harvest-themed dinner party is the perfect gathering to host. Make it quintessential fall—think pumpkins down the table, a brown and orange color scheme, and a gingham tablecloth. The menu, of course, should be full of seasonal autumnal dishes. Apples, squash, pumpkin, figs, and pears are all in season and hit their peak in September and October. Doesn’t butternut squash soup, pear salad, a roast chicken, and an apple crumble sound heavenly?

There’s truly nothing more comforting on a chilly night than soup. Once the temperatures start to dip, invite friends over for a cozy evening with soup as the main course. You can opt to prepare the soup yourself or go potluck-style and have everyone bring a batch. Make your soup well in advance so it has time to simmer and get as flavorful as possible (your house will smell amazing!), then keep everything warm on the stovetop or in a slow cooker. Set out some toppings like crackers or grated cheese, then pop a loaf of bread in the oven to get it warm and crusty right before guests arrive. The dress code for an evening like this has to be comfy and cozy—tell your guests to come in loungewear or PJs!

4. Witchy dinner party

Halloween girlies: This one’s for you. A spooky, witchy-themed dinner party would be so fun and perfect for the season! This is a gathering where the decor can really shine. Keep the vibe elevated with a gothic romantic theme that revolves around witchy details like moody-colored glassware, black serving pieces, and a cauldron to chill drinks. Then match your menu to the theme with fun, witchy dishes like beef bourguignon disguised as a witch’s stew, a poison apple martini, and black forest cake for dessert.

5. Football watch party

Fall means football. I grew up in a household where NFL Sunday was sacred, and watching the game with friends and loved ones is one of my favorite parts of the season. Whether you’re locked in on the game or you’re just there to get a peek at Taylor Swift in the stands, a football watch party is so fun to host. Game day food is simple—think chips and dip, chicken wings, and other finger foods. An air fryer comes in clutch for football party appetizers! Throw on your favorite team’s colors and keep this event casual with plenty of snacks and drinks on hand.

6. Friendsgiving

It’s never too early to start planning your Friendsgiving. Get a date on the calendar now when you can celebrate the season with your closest friends—the ones who feel like family. Friendsgiving can be a little more casual than Thanksgiving, so you don’t need to go overboard with decor and fancy table settings. This gathering really shines as a potluck, so invite everyone to bring a dish to share. To avoid duplicate dishes, create a sign-up sheet with different sides and desserts—like mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pies—that guests can claim ahead of time. While the host usually takes care of the turkey, you can also go non-traditional with a roast chicken, ham, or a vegetarian option like lasagna. And don’t forget to encourage your guests to bring their own containers for leftovers!

7. Paint and sip night

If you’re craving some time away from your phone, plan a girls’ night that revolves around crafting instead. While you could head to a local art studio for a paint-and-sip night, it’s also easy enough to recreate the same experience at home. Grab a few bottles of wine, set out some art supplies, and start creating your own masterpieces while gabbing and snacking on charcuterie. You could all attempt to recreate the same design, choose your own image to paint, or make it easy with paint-by-number kits. For an autumnal twist, paint pumpkins instead of canvases! I personally find painting so relaxing—it slows my brain down and helps me focus. Doing it while chatting with friends is even better!

There are simply so many fall movies to watch before the season is up, so why not invite your friends over and watch together? Whether you’re down for fall rom-coms or you’re more in the mood for Halloween horror, set the scene with lots of cozy blankets and pillows. Throw on your comfiest PJs, dim the lights, and hand out movie snacks—we’re talking popcorn and all the classic movie theater candy you and your friends love. If you’re feeling extra, buy movie theater-style boxes of candy and bags for popcorn to really complete the theater experience.

9. Chili cook-off

It’s time to dust off your crockpot because it’s finally chili season! If you and your friends have a competitive edge, a chili cook-off would be such a fun way to spend a fall evening or afternoon. Have everyone make their own signature chili recipe, take turns trying each one, then vote on your favorite. You can even have a fun prize for the winner! Set out small bowls for tasting, and serve plenty of toppings and sides like cornbread, tortilla chips, or even cinnamon rolls (a Midwestern classic).

10. Candlelit backyard dinner

Dining al fresco is usually reserved for the summer months, but there is a small window during the fall season where the weather is perfectly temperate in the evening. It’s wonderful for eating dinner outdoors without being too hot or too chilly. The sun starts setting earlier as well, making 7 p.m. the ideal time for a sunset dinner. Set the table outdoors, and bring a basket of blankets out with you so your guests can grab one if it gets too cold once the sun goes down. Even if you don’t have a backyard or outdoor space, an at-home outdoor happy hour would be just as lovely on a balcony or front porch. Make your space work for you! String lights and candles are highly encouraged for ultimate cozy vibes.
